If, like us, your ideal rucksack is really a dry bag with straps……then look no further. Of course, there are several brands producing something along these lines, but the FL 30 and FL 45 models are definitely our current favourites.
The 2 models are both works of fabric genius and, like most great design, the devil is in the detail. They are identical apart from the volume and the smaller FL30 makes a brilliant scrambling, hiking or ultralight Alpine climbing rucksack while the FL45 will excel for winter climbing, longer duration mountaineering or overnight trips.
Arcteryx have incorporated a super durable fabric body with a lightweight yet comfortable back panel and shoulder straps, a roll top dry bag closure (which also serves as an extension) and a light coloured interior so you find the gear item you are seeking.
The body is fully taped for waterproofness, there are twin ice axe holders, a front pocket (big enough for smaller items like snacks, car keys or a smartphone), a rope holder, simple unpadded waistbelt and chest strap and…..nothing else! There is everything you need and absolutely nothing more.
These packs look great, carry really well, are a breeze to pack, stand up to hard use, keep your kit dry and are very light. The only drawback is really the price with the FL 30 retailing at £140 and the FL 45 retailing at £150 – but this is Arcteryx innovation and quality after all!
