One of our all time favourite climbing films is The Dawn Wall. As the film documents Tommy and Kevin forging their improbable line up an incredible Yosemite sheet of rock, it also profiles these amazing climbers through their childhoods and family lives. It is a gripping and engaging study brought to our screens by the veteran film maker Peter Mortimer.
So, when we heard Peter’s new film project was a documentary about visionary Canadian climber Marc-André Leclerc, we had to find out more. Marc-Andre was a free-spirited 23 year-old who forged a quiet path in a noisy media focussed climbing world. He sought out some of the hardest lines on the planet and climbed them solo. Pure adventure with no margin for error.
Mortimer reveals that he found making the film a particular challenge as Marc-Andre proves to be an elusive subject. He lives a nomadic lifestyle and is publicity shy. He doesn’t own a phone or car and is reluctant to let the film crew in on his pure vision of climbing. As Peter struggles to keep up, Marc-Andrés climbs grow bigger and more daring.
Elite climbers are amazed by his accomplishments, while others worry that he is risking too much. Then, Marc-André embarks on a historic adventure in Patagonia that will redefine what is possible in solo climbing. Make sure to watch the trailer which we’ve included below.
