Essential info

Environment policy

We rely on the mountains for so much – our sport, our livelihood and our physical and mental well-being.  So it’s no surprise that we are passionate about protecting them and keeping our wilderness areas safe for the future.

Member 1% for the planet

Peak Mountaineering is a proud member of ‘1% for the planet’, a group launched by Yvon Chouinard, environmental activist and founder of outdoor clothing company Patagonia, Inc., and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies in 2001.  Members pledge 1% of sales (not profits) to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment to repair some of the inevitable damage we cause and offset our carbon deficit from travelling to these beautiful places.

We also adhere fully with the environmental guidelines of the UIAA (Union Internationale Des Associations D’Alpinisme) and are proud members of the John Muir Trust, the UK’s leading wild land conservation charity, and the Royal Geographical Society.

For all our foreign trips our prices include a ‘carbon-offsetting levy’, which we use to purchase carbon credits to minimise the impact of the aircraft emissions for the flights we take.  As far as we know we are the first guiding companies to run this scheme, and while we appreciate that it doesn’t solve all the environmental problems our trips cause, it helps far more than doing nothing!

Finally, as a responsible company we always try to look at simple ways to minimise our environmental impact such as reducing the amount of paper we use, having our t-shirts printed onto organic cotton, encouraging car sharing and, perhaps most importantly, by providing good role models through our work with young people.

Don’t blow it – Good planets are hard to find
