Introductory Scrambling Course Details
Who is the day suitable for?
Our 2 day Introductory Scrambling Course suits everyone from those completely new to the delights of scrambling through to those with some experience who still prefer to scramble under the supervision of a qualified instructor. The course is suitable for adults of all ages and we are happy to have participants as young as 16 although under 18’s need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you want us to arrange a similar event for groups under 16 please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
How fit do I need to be?
We will be operating in wilderness areas and travelling on open ground away from main footpaths so participants need to be physically able to cope with that. Having said that, we won’t cover a huge amount of distance as we’ll be on steeper ground for much of the day. As a general guide we will typically cover no more than 6-7 miles on each of the days which is a comfortable distance for most people even if they don’t walk in the hills regularly. It is not necessary to have a background in climbing to attend this course.
What is the format of the day?
All our scheduled scrambling courses are based in Snowdonia and we will meet at 9.00am in the village of Capel Curig which is right in the heart of several great scrambling areas (full joining instructions will be sent with your booking confirmation). We are very keen to help protect this precious natural environment (details of our Environment Policy are here) so if you don’t have a car we can collect you at the local train station and if you are travelling by bus we can also pick you up and drive you to the venue. Once introductions are complete we’ll head out to one of the many world class venues around the park to get started. After walking in to a suitable venue we’ll kit everyone up with safety equipment before heading onto some steeper ground. Our Introductory level course doesn’t usually involve the use of a rope (although our higher level courses certainly do).
We stay out for the full day so be sure to bring plenty of food and drink to keep your fuel levels up.
During the 2 days you’ll try a selection of scrambles and also learn a ‘toolbox’ of essential techniques ready to progress your own scrambling adventures if you choose. We’ll also visit a variety of venues to give you a thorough taste of the amazing scrambling Snowdonia has to offer. The selection of techniques covered will include:
• Choosing and the correct use of equipment
• Understanding grading systems and the use of guidebooks
• Route finding and locating scrambles in mountainous terrain
• Dealing with problems and emergency procedures
• Mountain navigation
• Scrambling movement skills
• Plenty of scrambling!
Each day will end at about 5.00pm.
Who will be looking after me?
Peak Mountaineering prides itself on the quality of its instructors and our excellent reputation. The instructor that leads your day will be fully qualified and fully insured. They will be also be one of our close knit instructor team and personally known to us. We only use instructors who know the area well so they can ensure you visit the best climbing venues and get the most from your day.
Having said all that, we know that the views of past clients are probably your best guide to the quality of our provision. Please take the time to read the independent reviews clients have left before you book.
Where can I stay?
Snowdonia has a wealth of accommodation options to suit all budgets. The course is centred around the village of Capel Curig but the nearby villages of Betws Y Coed and Llanberis are all ideally situated for the course. There are plenty of ideas available on our accommodation guide here.
What do I need to bring?
We provide helmets (although you are welcome to bring your own if you have one) so all you need is suitable clothing and lunch. Long trousers that you can move in freely and warm upper layers are ideal. Please also bring a set of waterproofs as the weather can change significantly over the course of a day and you’ll need a rucksack of around 30 litres to fit everything in. The best footwear is a pair of supportive and waterproof walking boots. Your course joining instructions will include a full kit list.
