Introductory 2 Days

Based in the Peak District, this 2-day course takes you through every aspect of basic navigation and is also a chance to explore this fantastic wilderness area. Upon completion participants are able to plan and follow simple walks mainly on paths and tracks.  As this course incorporates the NNAS bronze level syllabus we give participants the opportunity to be assessed for the award on the second day if they wish.  No previous experience required.

Areas covered include;

  •     Understanding the map as a two-dimensional plan.
  •     Using map symbols and scales on a variety of maps.
  •     Taking a 6 figure grid references and locating references on the map.
  •     Orientating maps with and without a compass.
  •     Using the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel.
  •     Choosing simple navigation strategies and routes.
  •     Using linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails.
  •     Estimating distance both on maps and on the ground
  •     Understanding contours to match landforms to their map representation.
  •     Planning safe and suitable walks.
  •     Relocating using simple techniques
  •     Understanding access rights and responsibilities.
  •     Demonstrating an awareness of access issues and access legislation
  •     Demonstrating knowledge of the countryside code and procedures to be followed in emergencies.
