Outdoor First Aid (2 day)
The 2 day ITC Outdoor First Aid course is suitable for most national governing body outdoor qualifications (e.g. Mountain Training qualifications, BCU, RYA, BCA and others). It is also ldeal for outdoor enthusiasts seeking training so they are better prepared if the worst happens. It involves 16 hours of tuition and also includes an element of assessment. The aim of the course is to enable students to recognise when someone has a medical emergency and be able to give immediate appropriate assistance at first aid level.
The trainers will seek to keep medical jargon and terminology to a minimum, concentrating on what you do in different situations rather than what you know. To this end students learn a set of general principles which they can adapt to different situations. The process of progressive skill development will be based on situation assessment and casualty examinations.
The course is of a very practical nature and will involve ‘treating’ other course members and acting as a casualty. On successful completion students will be awarded the Outdoor First Aid certificate which is valid for three years.
Topics covered will include:
- Guidance on current best practice and legislation
- Assessments of situations and casualty
- Airway, breathing and circulation assessments
- Emergency resuscitation (including use of AED's)
- Safe airway positions
- Dealing with choking
- Treatment of severe bleeding and shock
- Major injuries, including chest, head and pelvic injuries
- Treatment of fractures
- Environmental illnesses such as hypothermia and hyperthermia
- Life threatening conditions such as heart attack, asthma, diabetes, strokes, seizures, burns and anaphylactic shock
- Injury management in an outdoor situation
- Incident management scenarios
Peak Mountaineering First Aid Trainers
Peak Mountaineering only use trainers who have extensive experience in wilderness settings and most are mountaineering instructors employed full time in the outdoor industry. We feel this is essential for Outdoor First Aid courses focussed on remote locations and improvised casualty care scenarios.
All our outdoor first aid courses are run from the Hollowford Centre. Hollowford is a brilliant outdoor centre set in a stunning location under the East Face of Mam Tor in the Peak District National Park village of Castleton (further venue details will be sent with joining instructions). The Hollowford Centre offers comfortable, purpose built surroundings and Castleton is packed with accommodation options for all budgets and a host of outdoor activities right on the doorstep (a list of suitable local accommodation is here). You won't find a better option for your first aid training.
Our standard course cost is £125 per person but we are very happy to offer a discount of 10% discount for MLTA, AMI, BCU, BMC and IOL members (making it £112.50).
