Emergency First Aid At Work

first-aid 2

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is designed to give you the skills to manage a casualty for the vital 10 minutes it could take before the emergency services arrive.  With widespread ownership of mobile phones, faster ambulance response times and a reduction of heavy (machine based) industry this course is all that most people will ever need.

It involves 6 hours of tuition and also includes an element of assessment.  The aim of the course is to enable students to recognise when someone has a medical emergency and be able to give immediate appropriate assistance at first aid level.

The trainers will seek to keep medical jargon and terminology to a minimum, concentrating on what you do in different situations rather than what you know. To this end students learn a set of general principles, which they can adapt to different situations.  The process of progressive skill development will be based on situation assessment and casualty examinations.

The course is of a very practical nature and will involve ‘treating’ other course members and acting as a casualty. On successful completion students will be awarded the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate which is valid for three years.  This qualification has been available to employers to meet their statutory requirements since October 1st 2009.

Topics covered will include:

  • Guidance on current best practice and legislation

  • Assessments of situations and casualty

  • Airway, breathing and circulation assessments, including emergency resuscitation

  • Safe airway position

  • Dealing with choking

  • Treatment of severe bleeding and shock

  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries such as cuts, minor burns and scalds, bruises and splinters
