Picture InfoAll climbers need an incentive to succeed. For 5 year old Ben it just takes a few choccy buttons placed on holds........I wonder if Steve McClure ever tried that?!

Peak Mountaineering

Rock climbing

Introductory courses

Watched ‘cliff hanger’ and want to try it yourself (without the part where your harness breaks of course!).  No problem.  We run all types of introductory trips in the Peak District.  We work with families with children as young as 5, indoor climbers wanting to see what outside rock is like (much better!), we climb on single pitch crags and long mountain routes.

Whether you just want to have a go, progress onto something steeper than the hills you have climbed before or have a dream route in mind we will help you do it safely and with lots of fun.  If you don’t see what you want listed here or you want to run a similar course in a different part of the country please get in touch and we’ll organise it for you.

1-Day Introductory Course

Our Peak District taster course allows you to try climbing and see if you want to do more (you will!). We cover safe belaying techniques, equipment selection, interpreting guidebooks, how to stay safe at outdoor crags and environmental awareness.

As this is such a great option for families we offer a ‘parents pay but kids go free’ scheme which, we hope, makes it more affordable for a family group.  After all, we want to make climbing available to all and we’re parents too!  No experience required and all equipment included.

  • 1day
  • Maximum ratio 1:6
  • Cost £65 per person (total cost for families £130)
  • Non-residential

2-Day Introductory Course

2 action packed days in the Peak District will allow us to cover all the skills from the one day course but will also allow us to spend time looking at belay construction and safely setting up top and bottom rope systems which will be essential if you want to continue climbing outside yourself.  Of course, more course time also allows more climbing time and this allows you to consolidate the skills learnt on day one. No experience required and all equipment included. This is a very popular course option.

Indoor to Outdoor

So you’ve been climbing inside for a while, realised climbing really IS the best sport in the world, and now you want to venture outside.  Then this Peak District based course is perfect for you.  After identifying where you have got to with your indoor climbing, we teach you all the skills needed to move outside safely.  Equipment choice, venue selection, safety issues, placing gear, safe belaying, setting up top and bottom rope systems, dealing with problems, interpreting guidebooks, crag etiquette and movement skills will all be covered in a roller coaster two days with the emphasis always on a supportive, friendly and fun atmosphere.  Before booking this course please be aware that the holds on outdoor rock aren’t multicoloured!  This course is suitable for any pasty skinned cellar dwellers that have seen the light! All equipment provided.
