Morocco Winter Expedition
A trek or a peak (or both), long or short, near or far, high or not so high……2018 is going to be a bumper year for Peak Mountaineering Overseas Adventures and we really hope you can join us for a trip (or two!). The information below showcases our new Morocco Winter Skills/Winter Mountaineering option which offers a chance to mix learning some key skills with time in the stunning beauty of the Atlas Mountains. We are especially excited about this because, for many Peak Mountaineers, it will work out as cheap to take this trip as it would to make the journey to Scotland.....especially as return flights are great value at the moment (see info below).
We try to make our trips competitively priced but that certainly isn’t our main consideration. We look first and foremost at the quality of a trip and then work out the price accordingly. We use maximum staff ratios (including summit guides) and all our trips have an accompanying UK leader. This does mean some of our itineraries are a little more expensive than offerings from other companies, but we think it is the best way to operate. Please have a read and get in touch if it inspires you - our adventures are nothing without you.
Jebel Toubkal (Morocco) Winter Skills and Winter Mountaineering Expedition
22nd to 27th March 2018
What’s on Offer?
The Toubkal Range is a fantastic playground in Morocco’s High Atlas mountains. It is easily accessible from the UK and, with a great infrastructure, this is a unique winter adventure suitable for participants with good general hillwalking fitness and a thirst for mountain adventure.
For 2018 we’ll be offering a fantastic new Winter Skills itinerary which is suitable for both winter newbies as well as for those looking to revise existing skills. We’ll also have a winter mountaineering option for more experienced winter goers keen to take their adventures to the next level (this itinerary will be based around our popular 3 day winter mountaineering syllabus here).
What is the format for the trip?
The travel itinerary for both itineraries is the same - just the content differs.
Day 1 After flying into Marrakech we’ll transfer to the small mountain village of Imlil to spend our first evening in a comfortable riad in the heart of the mountains.
Day 2 We’ll make our way to a comfy refuge in the heart of the Atlas Mountains. This will then become our base for a few days of amazing mountain adventure. This day will also allow plenty of opportunity for us to share key winter skills.
Day 3 The refuge offers a perfect venue for skills training as there is easy access to plenty of winter terrain. Today will allow us a full training day and we’ll look at a broad range of essential skills for the winter mountaineer.
Day 4 After an early night we’ll put our skills into practice by ascending Jebel Toubkal which, at 4100metres, is the highest mountain in North Africa. After our early morning ascent we’ll head back to the refuge for breakfast and then walk back to Imlil for transport to Marrakech (please note that if you aren’t keen to ascend to Toubkal, this fourth day can be a chance to spend another morning learning skills before we leave the mountains).
Day 5 After spending our last night in a beautiful city centre Riad you’ll have time to explore the city before your flight home.
The Toubkal Refuge nestles in a broad cirque of mountains which offer fantastic winter mountaineering terrain. It really is mountaineering heaven and there is the option for more experienced mountaineers to join us and attempt some of these peaks. If you are interested in this option please contact us directly to discuss options individually.
Who are the instructors and what are the ratios?
Our mountaineering course guides will be fully qualified Mountain Instructors Certificate holders and the winter skills course will be either mountaineering instructors or winter mountain leaders. The skills courses will be run on a maximum of 6 clients to 1 instructor and 1 to 2 for winter mountaineering. Please note that some companies will run itineraries with higher ratios and the cost may be less, but we believe this offers a less educational and safety compromised option.
How much will it cost?
The cost for our Morocco Winter Skills Course is £595. This includes all instruction, all accommodation, internal transfers and all food (except the final evening’s meal in Marrakech). Infact, the only additional cost is the flights to and from Marrakech. Luckily, these are available from various UK airports and, as they are run by various low cost airlines, they are surprising good value (current examples are £140 return from Manchester and £100 from Gatwick).
