The Trek and Mountain Scottish Winter Weekender

15th Jan 2014

Last year we teamed up with our friends at Trek and Mountain Magazine to deliver a range of winter courses.  The collaboration was a great success so this year we decided to go one further and arrange a dedicated winter weekend of courses, lectures, quizzes, workshops and general mountain based socialising.  The 2014 Trek and Mountain Scottish Winter Weekender is here and, if you were still looking for a reason to head north this winter, we have just created your perfect excuse……

The first Trek & Mountain Winter Weekender, in association with DMM, takes place on March 1-3 2014 at the epicentre of British winter mountaineering – Ben Nevis and Glencoe.  The weekender will be a chance to improve your winter mountaineering skills in a friendly atmosphere with comfortable accommodation and amid the spectacular surroundings of the Highlands (we'll be staying in our usual cosy base at Inchree).

The weekend isn't just about learning though. We’ve got plenty of evening entertainment planned, with our mountain quiz on the Sunday night, great prizes from DMM to be won, plus a special lecture by leading British high-altitude mountaineer Adele Pennington,  Adele is a great speaker and highly experienced high altitude guide.  She'll be talking about her successes on the world’s highest peaks and is also the perfect person to advise any weekender participants with aspirations to climb at altitude.

We want the weekend to be open to everyone so the courses on offer are designed to suit all experience levels.  Attendees can choose from:

3 day Winter Skills Course
Designed for outdoor enthusiasts wishing to develop a ‘toolbox’ of techniques to operate safely in the Scottish winter mountains.  For participants with some prior experience the course will refresh and build on any existing winter skills, but it is also suitable for those with no previous winter experience.

3 day Winter Mountaineering Course
A great option for anyone with some experience in the winter mountains who now wants to develop the additional skills required to progress onto graded winter routes. It is also ideal preparation for anyone heading onto easier mountaineering itineraries in the Alps or Greater Ranges.  We’ll refresh basic winter techniques while developing the rope skills needed to operate safely on routes up to grade 2.

3 day Winter Climbing Course
Perfect for participants with previous winter experience who now want to get to grips with climbing in winter conditions.  Using climbs in the grade 2-5 range will allow us to introduce participants to all the key winter climbing skills as well as allowing us to tick off some Scottish winter classics.

The cost of the weekend depends on the course you sign up for – for Winter Skills it is £240 per person and for Winter Mountaineering and Winter Climbing the cost is £385 per person (the higher price of the more technical courses allows us to work on a very low instructor to client ratio to maximise learning and safety).

To discuss the course options or book your place either email us at info@peakmountaineering.com or call us on 01433 620283. But don’t hand around – there are only 14 places available!
